Mouth Cancer Screening
Mouth cancer is a malignant growth which can occur in any part of the mouth, including the tongue, lips and throat. Mouth cancers have a higher proportion of deaths per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer or skin melanoma. The mortality rate is just over 50%, despite treatment, with about 1,700 deaths per year in the UK. This is because of late detection. Visit your dentist at once if you notice any abnormal problems or are not sure. Six-monthly dental checkups allow early detection!

Why see a Hygienist at our Reading dental practice?

Emphasis on prevention
Healthy teeth and gums

When your Reading dentist refers you to a dental hygienist, he does so because you need the special skills for which the hygienist has been trained, skills which are usually underestimated and undervalued. The dental hygienist is by no means a second class citizen in the dental team, in fact the hygienist is an important and senior member of the dental profession, whose role will directly affect the health of your mouth.

Her aim is to help you keep you teeth for life, she has obtained a specialist qualification in dental hygiene to give her the necessary knowledge and training, her skills are the cornerstone of the modern preventive dental practice, for adults and children alike. With gum problems in mind, it is worth remembering that a hygienist actually receives more detailed training than a dentist in the very intrinsic skills required to remove scale from tooth and root surfaces.

An important function of the hygienist is to draw your attention to  particular problem areas in your mouth where cleaning may be difficult. The hygienist will recommend a suitable tooth brushing technique for you mouth. If special brushes, dental floss etc. are required, your hygienist will instruct you in the use of these techniques. Please let her know if you cannot manage, so that she can help you towards an alternative way of achieving the desired result.

Your hygienist is a highly trained, highly skilled professional. In employing her, your dentist obviously recognises this fact, we hope that you too will come to appreciate and respect her contribution to your overall dental health.
